Creating Optimal Health- You Can Do It!
The health of trillions of microorganisms living in our gut is more deeply connected to our health than most of us have imagined. Now, a new study shows that long-term dietary practices impact the richness and diversity of this community of microbes (termed microbiota), and it’s a good long-term investment to enrich the microbiota by improving dietary habits.
Researchers from Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, compared the characteristics of the microbial community in 2 groups of Americans; one group regularly consumed the typical American diet (excessive in calories, rich in refined carbohydrates, meats and highly processed foods) whereas the other group adhered to a caloric-restricted, mostly plant-based diet (low in meats, refined carbohydrates and fats, high in fruits and vegetables). They found that those who consumed plant-based diet had a richer and more diverse microbial community than those who consumed the typical American diet.1
